Today's reading — Romans 8:1-14▾
(1) There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (2) For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. (3) For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and for sin, condemned sin in the flesh: (4) That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. (5) For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. (6) For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. (7) Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. (8) So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. (9) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. (10) And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. (11) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. (12) Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. (13) For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. (14) For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

Around 1980, I heard a message that was based on the doctrine of unlimited grace from a preacher in Ilorin, a state capital in South West Nigeria. He taught that if a person is born again and wants to commit a sin, such as adultery or fornication, all the fellow needs to do is to inform Jesus beforehand. He even taught that such a person should pray in this manner, saying, “Lord Jesus, thank You for Your finished work on the cross at Calvary. Thank You for making me the righteousness of God in You. I am about to commit so and so sin, and when I am done, I will come back to tell You that I am sorry.” Unfortunately, he deceived many people, and I am sure that those who followed him and didn't truly repent before they died have ended up in hell. I do not want you to be deceived by such preachers who twist the truth about God’s grace. Anyone who sins willfully will go to hell, except he or she genuinely repents. If you do not believe me, read Hebrews 10:26-27:

For if we sin wilfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries.

The purpose of grace is not to give you a license to sin without any consequences; rather, it is to enable you to live above sin such that it will no longer have any power over you. One of the popular Bible verses that preachers of the unlimited grace doctrine usually use to deceive people is Romans 8:1:

There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

Those preachers quote the first part, which says that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, but leave out the part that says that they must not walk after the flesh, but after the Spirit. In other words, the works of the flesh listed in Galatians 5:19-21 must not be found in them, but the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:22-23 must be seen in them. It is only for people who walk in the Spirit that there is no condemnation. For those who choose to keep walking after the flesh, however, they will be condemned.
